When it comes to hot water plumbing, there are several types of hot water systems to choose from. The most common ones include traditional storage tank water heaters, tankless water heaters, heat pump water heaters, and solar water heaters.
Traditional storage tank water heaters are the most common type of hot water system found in households. They work by heating water and storing it in a tank until it is needed. These systems are relatively inexpensive but can be less energy efficient compared to other options.
Tankless water heaters, on the other hand, heat water on demand without the need for a storage tank. This can save space and energy since they only heat up water when needed. However, they may not be suitable for homes with high hot water usage.
Heat pump water heaters use electricity to move heat from the air or ground to heat the water. They are more energy efficient than traditional storage tank systems but may not work as well in colder climates.
Solar water heaters use sunlight to heat up a fluid that then transfers that heat to the water in a storage tank. These systems can be very energy efficient and environmentally friendly but may require a larger upfront investment.
Overall, choosing the right type of hot water system for your home will depend on factors such as your budget, energy efficiency needs, and local climate conditions. It's important to consider all these factors before making a decision on which system is best for you.
Hot water is essential for daily activities, and when the system starts to fail, it can be a major inconvenience. Recognizing the signs of a failing hot water system early can help prevent unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs. One of the most obvious signs that repairs are needed is a lack of hot water. If the water suddenly turns cold or fluctuates in temperature, there may be an issue with the heating element, thermostat, or gas supply.
Another common issue is discolored or rusty water, which can indicate sediment buildup in the tank or corrosion inside the pipes. Flushing the system can help clear sediment, but if the problem persists, professional servicing may be required. Strange noises coming from the water heater, such as banging or rumbling, are another sign of sediment buildup. As sediment settles at the bottom of the tank, it hardens and causes the system to overheat, leading to inefficiency and potential damage.
Leaks around the water heater should never be ignored. Even small leaks can indicate a serious internal issue, such as a failing pressure relief valve or corrosion in the tank. Left unaddressed, leaks can cause water damage and increase utility bills. A sudden increase in energy costs may also suggest a problem with the hot water system. If the heater is working harder than usual due to faulty components or sediment buildup, it will consume more energy and lead to higher bills.
Hot water systems typically last between 8 to 15 years, depending on maintenance and usage. If a system is nearing the end of its lifespan and experiencing frequent issues, it may be more cost-effective to replace it rather than continue with repairs. Addressing hot water problems early ensures consistent performance and extends the life of the system.

Took my call at 4am and scheduled maintenance for later that s same morning. Heath was great with good Comms on arrival time. Nice and friendly lad. Workmanship very tidy. Thanks Howrah Plumbing.
Was able to book online including a prefered time, which was easy to do. Turned up on time. Plumber was polite, professional and was quickly able to fix what turned out to be a small issue and also checked to make sure there was nothing bigger wrong.
Liam was fantastic - got the job done so well and with speed. Great to have such a personable plumber and so young with a bight head on his shoulders. Only ever use Howrah Plumbing they are a very reliable company. Thanks
I’m super happy with how things were handled - an urgent, after hours call was made, with Mitch turning up less than half an hour later, calm and polite and he efficiently took care of our very smelly, clogged drain. We have an open for inspection the next morning and I was heading out of town the same day so I’m beyond grateful and impressed that Howrah Plumbing took care of things so well - imagine prospective buyers turning up in the morning to that stink. Thanks so much. Highly recommend.
